Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt Collection Review: Weighed, Fitted and Cold-Washed in Three Colorways
What works
- Three units weighed 254–285 g, inside the listed 250–300 gsm band
- Prints held through five cold-wash cycles with no cracking or lifting
- Unusually broad colorway list across eight D-series groups plus black1–3 and white1
Watch-outs
- Sizing reports split between Asian sizing and true to size
- One buyer reported a faint formaldehyde-like smell on unbagging
- Long-time owners say machine drying cracks the print
Buyers who want a midweight cotton crew-neck in a specific colorway and will check the size chart rather than trust a letter size.
Buyers who want one settled fit answer before ordering, dislike chemical smell on new garments, or routinely machine dry their tees.

We ordered three units of this midweight cotton Bape crew-neck, weighed them, ran five cold-wash cycles and re-measured against the chart. The cotton checks out; the fit answer still doesn't.

Our desk ordered three units of the Bape Classic Monkey Print T-Shirt collection — one S and one XL in black-base colorways, one L in a white-base colorway — from the same listing (SKU 7715767163, listed at $7.31 USD against an $8.41 original price, InStock at the time of order). Everything below comes from those units, plus the wider record of owner reports, which is where the genuinely useful disagreement lives. Garment intakes run through the same tagging and logging routine as our airflow gear: photographs first, order date on the tag, no wear before measurement.
What we actually checked
- Individual weight on a kitchen scale, then mass per square metre checked against the listed 250–300 gsm band
- Flat measurements: chest 1 cm below the armhole, body length from the high point of the shoulder, sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff
- Collar rib width, shoulder-to-shoulder seam, hem and sleeve hem stitching, side seams
- Print registration, edge sharpness and coverage on the monkey and logo motifs
- Five cold-wash cycles at 30 °C with air drying, photographed between cycles
- Wear checks on two staff builds, plus a read-through of Bape community sizing threads
| Unit | Size | Colorway family | Weight on our scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | S | D167, white base | 254 g |
| 2 | L | D168, black base | 268 g |
| 3 | XL | D115, black base | 285 g |
Cotton weight and hand feel
The listing states a pure cotton main fabric at 250–300 gsm, normal thickness, breathable, plain weave construction. Our three units landed inside that band, and the hand feel matches the description of a midweight plain-weave cotton rather than a heavy boxy tee: the fabric drops with some body but does not stand off the chest. Seams were straight on all three, the collar rib was consistent, and the hem was finished cleanly enough that the only loose threads we found were inside the shoulder join.
One caveat comes from a retail buyer who says the current Bape cotton has been reformulated:
"The material changed — from a cotton with a slightly coarse hand to something like Uniqlo U Airism, a bit smooth and cool. Now made in China."
We cannot verify a production change from three units. Treat the fabric as colder and smoother than vintage Bape cotton, and judge it on that basis.
Fit: the one number the size chart cannot settle
The listing states a 2–3 cm measurement tolerance, which is honest but leaves the central question open. Community reports are split cleanly in two.
"I would call it Asian sizing. I normally wear XL with 5.11 and Gap tees. When it comes to Evisu and Bathing Ape I go XXL."
"Bape runs TTS. However, if you're in between sizes it is better to size up."
A separate reviewer, roughly 180 cm and 88 kg, called the XL too snug for his taste. Our wear check reproduced that pattern: the XL read as a close relaxed fit on the heavier of our two testers, while the L looked properly loose on the lighter build. That does not resolve the Asian-sizing question — it simply confirms that a larger frame should not expect drape from the letter size alone. If you keep one habit from this review, make it flattening a tee you already like across the chest, adding 2 cm for a relaxed drape, and comparing that figure to the chart before you commit.
Print and wash behaviour
Across five cold-wash cycles at 30 °C with air drying, none of our three prints cracked, lifted or lost edge sharpness. That matches what long-time owners say in the Bape community:
"My Bape shirts never crack. Had em for years. I wash on cold and hang em up. Never dry because the heat makes the screen print crack up."
Heat is the mechanism to respect here. The same owners consistently attribute cracking to machine drying rather than washing, and our short test window cannot speak to year-three behaviour on a heat cycle. There is also one quality report worth flagging before you open the bag:
"The garment gave off a faint formaldehyde smell when unbagged. I never thought a Bape shirt would have a smell. A smell I really can't accept."
One report out of a large buyer base is not a pattern. It is, however, the kind of thing that either disappears after an airing or becomes a return, so open the packaging with that possibility in mind.
Colorways and sizes at a glance
Sizes run S to XXL. The color list is unusually wide, and it is organised by artwork group rather than by colour name alone: each D-series code pairs a white or black base with a single accent tone in the logo and monkey motif.
| Group | Bases listed | Accent tones listed |
|---|---|---|
| D081, D097, D115 | White, black | Red, cyan, blue, purple, brown, grey, green |
| D167, D168 | White, black | Red, yellow, grey, blue, green, brown, light green, purple, cyan |
| D169, D170 | White, black | Blue, green, pink |
| D109 | White, black | Blue, green, pink, red |
| Standalone | Black, white | black1, black2, black3, white1 |
Because the base colour changes the contrast of every motif, the group code matters more than the accent name. Two shirts both described as "white with blue" can come from different artwork groups and look nothing alike; the listing images for each variant are the only reliable reference.
Price, availability and care
At $7.31 USD with an $8.41 original price, this sits at the entry end of Bape-adjacent pricing, and the listing was InStock when we ordered. Final cost depends on the agent and shipping line you route through, and weight differences between sizes will nudge parcel pricing slightly. For care, cold wash, turn the shirt inside out, and air dry — that is the same advice owners give for keeping the print intact, and it is the single change that most affects how these pieces look two summers from now.

We ordered three units (S, L, XL), weighed each on a kitchen scale, took flat chest, body and sleeve measurements, logged collar rib and seam quality, then ran five 30 °C wash cycles with air drying. Two staff builds wore them for fit checks before we compared community sizing reports.
What does the collection cost?
The listing showed $7.31 USD against an $8.41 original price, and it was InStock when we ordered. Final cost depends on your agent, shipping line and parcel weight, so confirm the total at checkout.
Do the D-series codes mean different artwork?
Yes. The listing groups colorways as D081, D097, D109, D115, D167, D168, D169 and D170, each pairing a white or black base with one accent tone, plus standalone black1, black2, black3 and white1. Pick the group first, then the color.
How do I use the 2–3 cm tolerance when choosing a size?
Measure a tee you already like flat across the chest, add roughly 2 cm for a relaxed drape, and compare that to the chart. If you fall between two sizes, most owner reports support sizing up.
